Fasten your seatbelts, folks! These new smartphones are going to significantly change how we communicate and how fast we can make buying decisions. Thanks to the advent of web friendly phones like iPhone, Google G1, and Blackberry Storm we can now get information without ever opening a computer. What’s even cooler is all the kelsey-group-mobile-likelihood-purchase-smartphone-september-20081applications that can be downloaded to the phone to help us disseminate information and have fun.

Here’s some food for thought: The Kelsey Group did a study of mobile phone users and found that roughly 50% of those surveyed plan on buying a smartphone in the next two years. Think about how that might affect your business in the coming years.

Why is mobile important?

For starters, you need to think about a mobile friendly version of your website. Many of today’s websites have advanced programming like Flash, and Javascript that does not appear in a mobile web browser. If a potential client is pondering a purchase or doing some research and your site does not appear. Guess what? They might find your competitor next.

We live in a world of instant gratification. Just think about how many times you have been waiting in line, enjoying a peaceful lunch, or waiting for a flight, only to think of a great idea for your business.  Now imagine if a potential customer that has some time to kill. They might start doing some research on their phone. What if that research lands them on your website? Bingo, you’ve got yourself a potential customer.

I will leave you with this thought. Mobile phone technology is changing fast. Are you sure your business is keeping pace with the trends? Read this article if you are not convinced.

You can check the mobile friendliness of your site using the W3C Validator.
