How can good content boost my search rankings?

October 15, 2009

To get the most qualified traffic to your site, you’ll want to entice those people with content that really matters to them and answers their questions. Sure, you can build links and distribute them everywhere, but what good are those links if they don’t bring in the right audience? The best way to build links organically and get qualified search results is right there in your content.

Make sure that your content is interesting. Look at your site’s content and ask yourself if it’s enticing you to read further. Better yet, consider user testing to see if your message resonates with your audience.

Make sure that your content is focused. Do your homework and use keywords that your target audience uses–you might be surprised at what you uncover. Keyword-focused content does not mean using keywords unnaturally over and over again. It does mean that your content stays on topic and uses the right terms.

Write in a way that’s easy to read and share. How-to, Q&A, and list posts provide really valuable information in an easy-to-read format. They’re easy to read and tend to provide info in a way that encourages people to share.

Share and share alike. When you publish content, be sure to tell people about it through e-mail marketing, social media, and even through traditional PR. Make it easy for your readers to share, too–offer ways that people can share your article right on the page.

Bottom line: Having content that’s meaningful and readable by your target audiences is the most important first step. Sharing it and making it easy to share is the second.
